We have to catch the Pine Cone Train, but it’s almost certainly trapped and secured. Gecko should know the details. Gretchen attempts to seduce him but he’s unimpressed. He wants amnesty and to join the Autumn Court and he’ll tell us what we need to know about the train. Joel asks Otohime if amnesty has been offered before in the Freehold. It has. Joel draws up a pledge and Gecko starts talking. Due to the security on the train, only Mirabelle can be freed before everything locks down. Gretchen and KJ will dress as Freebooters and infiltrate the train and Susie will sew KJ and Gretchen some outfits for the operation.
Tony wakes up after a night of drinking and hot steamy love times at Luis’s apartment. Otohime and Johnny have a heart to heart about killing and being careful not to become like the Others. Tony returns and gives a stuffed bear to Susie as a Christmas gift. She names it Sir Bearington. Tony is upset about Gecko being given amnesty, but still gives Joel his present (a copy of The Graveyard Book) before storming off. He gives Christmas lights to the Hotel California robot and reindeer horns to Ichi. He also has a six pack of Monster for Johnny.
Joel gathers Johnny, Susie, and Tony to create a pledge for the Motley. They start to question KJ and Gretchen’s loyalty. The two women are made to take a separate pledge for the mission. Tony is not ok with us leaving the rest of the victims and only freeing Mirabelle. Tony goes to Otohime in secret to setup a bomb for the train once Mirabelle is out. He also asks if Otohime can get him a deed to the house the Motley all stay in, in exchange for taking care of the Fair Rest Inn.
The leader of the Mothers Men is named Reins, formerly Mothers coachman. The Mother’s Men ride creatures called Thornskwimmers that can be ridden like giant silvery green flounders to catch the train. KJ and Gretchen dress in Gecko and Lily’s gear and drive to the old shack where they came through the hedge before. Gretchen and KJ mount their Thornskwimmers and fly through the canopy. The others climb up separately. The train is pulled by dead frozen cardinals and Reins is at the helm. Gretchen looks him in the eye and tells him Mother has sent her and to gather the Mother’s Men. They gather at the helm and she convinces them that the Freehold will show amnesty, pointing out Gecko in his hiding place outside, who is very confused. Johnny finds Mirabelle and frees her from the amber prison with the help of Tony and Joel. Suddenly, Staghart and Katrine arrive. KJ and Gretchen jump back on the Thornskwimmers with Gecko in tow. KJ drops Gecko and Gretchen with Joel. Tony and KJ then go to the engine room but are unable to stop the train and the engine explodes.
The Motley questions Mirabelle but she seems to think Staghart is on the up and up, however there is a winter courtier named Belvedere who she saw talking to Pale Eel, the likely perpetrator of the bar explosion. Staghart shows up and Joel presents Mirabelle to him. KJ and Gretchen thank Staghart for saving them, but due to their shared Durance with the San Jose Motley they wish to stay and pledge to the Quatraine Kingdom. Staghart says that he understands and leaves with Mirabelle. Gretchen approaches Katrine and asks to pledge to the Winter Court.
